                                                                          OUR LADY OF MERCY (BRIEF HISTORY)

Also referred to as “Our Lady of Ostra Brama (Ostrabramska)”, and Our Lady, Gate of Dawn (Lithuanian; Ausros Vartu Dievo Motina, Polish: Matka Boska Ostrobramska) is the prominent painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of Mercy venerated by the faithful in the Chapel of the  Gate of Dawn in Vilnius, Lithuania. It derives its name from the location of the dedicated Chapel built to house it, which is on the “Gate of Dawn, the city gate of Vilnius, capital of Lithuania.

In Eastern Catholic and Catholic Orthodox tradition, this beautiful Icon is adorned with Gold and silver. She is not holding the Christ child … But rather has her arms crossed. This is typical posture in Eastern Churches for someone who has just received Holy Communion. In this manner many is signifying that Christ is present within her.
