In the book of Revelation it says nothing defield shall enter Heaven (Rev. 21:27)

All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necesary to enter the joy of heaven. The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned. The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire. (CCC 1030-1031)

In the Scriptures, mention is made that on the deaths of Jonathan, Saul and Abner, the prople fasted for entire week, believing that this had a purifying effect for the souls who had passed away ( 1 Sam 31 : 13).

The dying Tobias said to his son, “Place your bread on the tomb of the righteous, and gather the poor around it to eat and drink” ( Tobias 4:7 ). This was because he believed that any act of charity done for the poor had a purifying effect for the departed souls.

Jesus speaks about the sins against the Holy Spirit, which cannot be pardoned in the other world. (Mt. 12 : 32).  As a consequence of this statement, then, there must be a place in the other world where sin can be remitted. Again Jesus warns us to make peace with our accuser while there is time. ( Mt. 5 : 25 ). Who is our accuser? The devil or our conscience.

St. Pauls himself said that Souls who are not pure, cannot reach Heaven, but only as through fire ( 1 cor. 3 : 15 ).

CAN WE THEN PRAY FOR THE DEAD?

In the book of Maccabees, it is reported that after the battle against G0rgia’s men, Judas made a collection and sent it to Jerusalem, so that a sin offering could be made for the souls of those who had died in the battle, as it was holy and beneficial to pray for the dead, so that their sins could be pardoned. ( 2 Macc. 12 : 43 – 46 ).

                                                                                    ETERNAL REST

Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.

Our Lady Queen of the Holy Souls, pray for us. Amen
