Payment of Tithe

Payment of Tithe

The Lord said, “I have given to the Levites every tithe that the people of Israel present to me. This is my payment for their service for taking care of the Tent of my Presence. … The Levites shall have no permanent property in Israel because I have given to them as their possession the tithe which the Israelites present to me.”  The Lord commanded Moses to say to the Levites; “When you receive from the Israelites, the tithe that the Lord gives you as your possession, you must present a tenth to the Lord.”   (Num 18: 21 – 29)

THE LAW OF THE TITHE: ANNUAL TITHE

Every year you must take a tithe – a tenth of all that your fields produce, and then go to the place where the Lord your God has chosen to be worshiped; and there in his presence eat the tithes of your Corn, Wine, Olive oil, and the First-Born of your Herd and flock. If the place of worship is too far from your home … sell your produce and take the money with you to the one place of worship. Spend it on whatever you want – beef, lamb, wine, beer – and there, in the presence of the Lord your God, you and your families are to eat and rejoice.

                                                                                THE THIRD YEAR TITHE

At the end of every three years, you must take all the tithes of your harvests for that year and collect them in your community. Then the Levites since they have no share or heritage of their own among you. The Foreigners, the Orphans and the Widows in your community, will come and eat all they want. Do this and your Lord and your God will bless you in every thing that you do           (Dt 14: 22  -  29)

                                                                WARNING FROM THE PROPHET MALACHI

The book of Malachi comes from some time in the fifth century BC after the Temple in Jerusalem was rebuilt. “I am the Lord, and I do not change .. you like your ancestors before you, turned away from my laws and have not kept them. I ask you, is it right for a person to cheat God? Bring the full amount of tithes to the Temple, so that there will be plenty of food there. Put me to the test and you will see that I will open the windows of heaven and pour out on you in abundance all kinds of good things.”   (Mal. 3: 6  -  12)

                                                                    THE CURSES ON DISOBEDIENCE

The Laws and Teachings that God gave through Moses were vast; including what animals to eat or not eat. “Like Pig Meat”. We know that must people today eat “Hot Dog, Bacon, Ham etc. “But God’s curse on any one who does not obey ALL of God’s Laws and Teachings. And all the people will answer, Amen”.  (Dt. 27 : 26). There are more about tenth payment in the Bible: Gen 14: 17   -  20;   Lev 27 : 30 – 32.

WHAT JESUS SAID ABOUT THE LAW

Do not think that I have come to do away with the Law of Moses and the teachings of the prophets. I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfil them.   (Math 5:  17  -  20)

If Christ has fulfilled these Laws and Teachings in the Old Testament, we Christians today have nothing whatsoever to do with these Laws. Let us look at what St Paul said about these Laws in Galatians Chapter Three. (Gal 3 : 1  -  25)

“Tell me this one thing: did you receive God’s Spirit by doing what the Law requires or by hearing the Gospel and believing it?”  (Gal 3 : 2). “Consider the experience of Abraham; as the scriptures says, He believed God, and because of his faith God accepted him as righteous”. You should realise then that the real descendants of Abraham are the people who have faith. (Gal 3 : 6  -  7). So we are put right with God by faith in Jesus Christ; and Christ took upon Himself our sins and the curse of the law on the Cross. “As the scripture says, as the law has become a curse for us, Christ redeemed us from the curse that the law brings. Anyone who is hanged on a tree is under God’s curse”. (Gal 3 : 13). “Now that the time of faith is here, the law is no longer in charge of us. It is through faith that all of you are God’s children in union with Christ Jesus”.

The trouble of trying to keep the Law is this: Those who depend on obeying the Law live under a curse, for the scripture says, “Whoever does not always obey EVERYTHING that is written in the book of the Law in under God’s curse” (Gal 3 : 10).

                                                                                       MY CONCLUSION

My conclusion is this: If you are happy to pay tithe, know the laws of tithe, and keep all other laws and teachings as give to the people of Israel so that you will not be under God’s curse. You can always make any percentage of your income as an offering to your church or parish in your weekly offerings. Then it is not a tithe. Our power and strength to build and support our Church is in our weekly offerings and donations according to our individual means.

May God bless you all.
